Winterising Your Nordic Home: A Complete Autumn Checklist

Before the snow arrives, Nordic homes need specific preparation. This checklist covers everything from pipe insulation to roof snow guards.

    Why Winterisation Matters in Scandinavia

Temperatures in Norway, Sweden, and Finland can drop to โˆ’25ยฐC or lower, and homes that are not properly prepared face burst pipes, ice dam damage, and catastrophic heat loss. This checklist works through every system in your home before the first hard frost.

    Roof and Gutters

    • Clear gutters and downpipes of leaf debris before freeze โ€” ice forming in a blocked gutter tears it from the fascia
    • Check snow guards (snรถrasskydd) are secure; loose guards can release dangerous snow slides
    • Inspect roof flashings around chimneys and skylights โ€” freeze-thaw cycles work these loose over time
    • Check the attic for adequate ventilation; a cold attic is better than a warm one for preventing ice dams

    Pipes and Plumbing

    • Insulate all pipes in unheated spaces (garage, crawl space, outdoor utility room) with foam pipe lagging
    • Know where your main water shutoff is โ€” if a pipe bursts, you need to find it in seconds
    • Drain outdoor taps (hose bibs) and disconnect garden hoses
    • If you have a summer cabin (hytte/stuga/mรถkki) that will stand empty: either maintain minimum heat at 10ยฐC, or fully drain the water system

    Heating System

    • Service your boiler or heat pump before the cold season โ€” waiting lists for engineers are long in October and November
    • Bleed radiators to remove air pockets
    • Check underfloor heating manifolds for leaks
    • Stock emergency fuel: even homes on district heating should have a backup heat source
    • Test smoke and CO detectors โ€” increased use of fireplaces and log burners in winter raises risk

    Windows and Doors

    • Check rubber seals on windows and doors โ€” cracked or compressed seals let in cold air and cause condensation
    • Apply draught excluders to door bottoms
    • Consider interior secondary glazing for older windows that you cannot yet afford to replace

    Outdoor and Foundation

    • Ensure ground slopes away from the foundation โ€” water pooling near the base will freeze and can crack foundations
    • Store garden furniture, tools, and anything water-sensitive
    • Disconnect and store outdoor sprinkler systems
    • Check that vents in crawl spaces are working correctly
