About NordicToNook
NordicToNook is a home maintenance resource written specifically for European homeowners โ covering everything from the damp terraces of the British Isles to the sun-baked stone farmhouses of the Mediterranean and the snow-loaded timber homes of Scandinavia.
Why this site exists
Most home maintenance content online is written for American or Australian homes. When a UK homeowner searches for "how to deal with rising damp," they get results about French drains designed for Californian climates. When a German homeowner looks for basement waterproofing advice, they find guides written for North American poured concrete basements, not for the solid masonry and clay tile construction common in Central Europe.
European homes are older, built differently, and face climate conditions that require specific knowledge. We built NordicToNook to fill that gap.
Our climate zones
We organise all guides by climate zone rather than country, because the challenges of a coastal Norwegian home are more similar to a Scottish Highland property than to a home in inland Sweden. Our six zones are:
- Nordic & Scandinavia โ extreme cold, snow load, freeze-thaw cycles
- British Isles โ persistent rain, rising damp, ageing housing stock
- Central Europe โ seasonal humidity swings, basement challenges, cold winters
- Mediterranean โ extreme heat, drought, sun damage, winter rain
- Atlantic Coast โ salt air corrosion, high winds, storm exposure
- Alpine Regions โ snow load, freeze-thaw, altitude-specific challenges
Affiliate links
Some guides on this site contain affiliate links to products we recommend. If you buy through these links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only link to products that are genuinely available in European markets and that we have researched. Our editorial decisions are never influenced by affiliate relationships โ if a product is not suitable for European conditions, we will say so.
We are based in Australia and run this site remotely. All product recommendations are for European markets through networks like Awin, Amazon UK, and Amazon DE.
