Roof & Snow Prep

Inspect snow guards (snörasskydd) — tighten loose fixings
Check attic ventilation — must stay cold to prevent ice dams
Clear gutters before freeze — blocked gutters tear off in ice
Inspect roof flashings and chimney sealant before first frost
Check roof structure for any signs of movement or damage

Pipes & Plumbing

Insulate all pipes in unheated spaces with foam pipe lagging
Test and locate the main water shut-off valve
Drain outdoor taps and disconnect garden hoses
If you have a hytte/stuga: either maintain 10°C heat or fully drain water system
Check heat tape on vulnerable pipe runs is working

Heating System

Service boiler, heat pump, or district heating connection
Bleed radiators and check underfloor heating manifolds
Stock emergency fuel (firewood, pellets, or diesel for backup)
Test and replace batteries in smoke and CO detectors
Check wood-burning stove flue for creosote buildup — sweep if needed

Windows & Doors

Check rubber window seals — crack or harden with age
Apply draught excluders to external door bottoms
Inspect window double/triple glazing for failed seals (condensation between panes)
Lubricate door and window hinges and locks

Grounds

Ensure ground slopes away from foundation — water pools freeze and crack
Store garden furniture and outdoor water features
Disconnect and drain garden irrigation systems
Check basement and crawl space ventilation before closing for winter
